Black and white portrait of a man with a beard sitting, wearing a coat, resting his head on his hand with a watch on his wrist.

Hi, I’m Adrian Luican

I’m a portrait and editorial photographer based in Bucharest, Romania. I work with people who want images that feel honest, calm, and real. My focus is on presence, expression, and the quiet moments that usually go unnoticed.

I photograph leaders, creatives, and individuals who don’t want to perform in front of the camera, but to be seen as they are. My work is rooted in simple light, natural gestures, and a cinematic approach that values feeling over perfection.

My Creative Approach

I work in a documentary-inspired way, even when the setting is controlled. I pay close attention to how someone moves, pauses, and occupies space. I don’t over-direct. I create the conditions where people can relax, slow down, and show up naturally.

Most of my portrait work happens in Bucharest, but I travel across Romania and internationally for projects that need time, attention, and trust. Whether it’s a personal portrait, a commissioned project, or an editorial series, the intention stays the same: to create images that still make sense years from now.

My influences include André Josselin, Mihai Badoi, Edward Hopper, Andrey Tarkovsky and Roger Deakins — artists who care about feeling over perfection. Their approach shaped the way I work today.

Selected projects and experience

Over the years, I’ve worked on both commissioned and long-term personal projects that sit at the intersection of portraiture, identity, and storytelling.

For iSTYLE Romania, I photographed a series of corporate portraits that later evolved into a personal project titled Conversations. The series explores presence and authenticity within professional environments, focusing on subtle expressions rather than formal roles.

For eight months, I worked on 25 50 100 Legacy, a book by Oliver Perkins launched in 2025. The project brings together 50 leaders from Romania, each sharing their story in just 100 words. I photographed all the individuals included in the book. Through both images and text, the project explores real experiences, mistakes, resilience, and the kind of legacy shaped through everyday decisions.

Alongside these, I regularly work on commissioned portrait and editorial photography for brands and individuals, documented here.

I also volunteer as a photographer when projects align with my values. In 2025, I photographed the Edelweiss Charity Ball in support of HOSPICE Casa Speranței.

My first solo exhibition, "SMTH. TO BE TOUCHED BY", is currently part of a permanent exhibition hosted by MSociety.ro and brings together several years of personal photographic work.

What Drives Me

I’m interested in people, not appearances. I care about images that feel quiet, grounded, and human. Portraits that don’t try to impress, but stay with you.

Whether I’m photographing someone for a book, a brand, or themselves, I’m drawn to the same thing: moments that feel true, without being forced.

Why Work With Me?

A portrait session with me is a professional and relaxed experience. I guide you through the process while keeping things natural and unforced. My focus is on helping you feel comfortable in front of the camera and creating portraits that feel honest, personal and true to you.

Let’s Talk.
